Building a Champion’s Mindset — Get things done
We all know or have heard of champions: The Roger Federer’s, the Steve Jobs, The Muhammad Ali’s. These are the obvious names that come to our minds. However, not all champions are famous. Some of them just keep on at it all their life without becoming famous to the world, yet in their niche or in their circle they are known as the doers. The person people go to when they know they want something done. The dependable one, the one who will get the job done.
I was chatting with a colleague at work yesterday and that’s when we stumbled on to this concept when we pondered over the question “How does one get things done?”In this piece we will explore what (I believe) is the difference in the mindset between the people who get the job done and the rest.
We’ll split this conversation into Intrinsic Factor and Extrinsic Factors with the caveat that some of the extrinsic factors have a significant influence on the intrinsic ones.
Let’s start with the extrinsic ones.
- A nurturing environment
Parenting is key, parents that believe in you, that see the best side in you and believe you have the potential to do something truly remarkable in your life. This drives so much success in your life. Especially your mother’s love. As one grows older, a partner that believes in you is essential. This base
2. The friends/company you keep
What kind of people do you surround yourself with, are they optimists? Do they believe there is hope? Our friends or the company with whom we spend the most amount of time with have an influence over our mindset. A pessimist never achieved much beyond a book or two and that too they might write begrudgingly. Things get done when you believe you can do them.
3. The physical environment you find yourself in
If one sees ugly things around them it’s hard to be inspired. Create your own beautiful corner if you live in a world of ugliness. This beauty inspires you to create and achieve in other areas of your life
The Intrinsic Motivators
What’s the self talk. What do you tell yourself about your own abilities. The extrinisic factors have an impact on the intrinsic ones. The story you tell yourself about you. Try to harbor a growth mindset. What this means is, take each day as an opportunity to improve and grow. Measure how far you’ve come. When you start a job, break it into smaller pieces and get each smaller piece done well. In the beginning just focus on getting things done. Over time aim to do it in the best possible way you can. Soon you will notice that the way you get things done no matter what the task at hand is, you’re doing it better than majority of the people out there.
The more you do things well, the more confidence and self-belief you develop. Over time you develop a mindset that champions have.
